T.L.: We came from America after a three-month tour and within three or four days, this video shoot was meant to begin. We had all thought up this real big story, with a script, partly improvised. It was supposed to look like Kaspar Hauser, orphans. And death on a boat. Several stories, that associate with the text.

J.H.: What Rammstein does, is they confront us with our fears.
At that time, when we were making Rammstein videos, they were really interested in appearing as actors. Schneider told us of this idea, they'd like to use, with Till, just rowing a boat on his own on a black sea.

P.H.L.: In my opinion, he should jump in a rowing boat in Iceland, and cross the Blue Lagoon, which is an extreme body of water. The sea is almost light blue, milky white, surrounded by black rocks. For some strange reason, the sea was moved to Germany. Which is why poor Till had to sit in a freezing trench.

T.L.: They dug a huge hole there in the earth with a mini excavator. Everything was wet, drenched, slippery and muddy. It was a really deep hole in a lake like that.

J.H.: I think that our stage manager went overboard. Till had to get into the water too and it was below zero, snow and ice. At least we wore wetsuits, but it was frigging cold.

T.L.: We originally wanted to make a few diving scenes in the lake. And come out of the water and... do things. But it was no use. Despite the wetsuits. As soon as you had your head under water, it was so incredibly cold.
I shaved my head and kept it that way the whole tour. We always go for original hair styles (laugh).

J.H.: His hair was sheared short and he had to wear a toupee, because we wanted two different worlds.

T.L.: I'm wearing a wig, because we wanted to emulate the aesthetics of the album cover and that was a wig. It often swam on the surface and it's very difficult to adhere a toupee to a wet scalp.

R.Z.K.: For me, "Mutter" is one example and in some way it's indicative of the band, that it's important, that these six people are involved, whether it's visual or creative. When this component is missing, this chemical reaction between each other, then you arrive at this, as in "Mutter".

T.L.: That all got a little out of hand, because this controlling body 'band' was missing.
The treatment was done, we read whilst we were on tour. And the colleagues were to contribute somehow, as they were integrated in the story. But no one could be bothered. After three months on tour, no one was in the mood to make a video. But everything was planned and ready. The others were off on vacation, except for Olli, so then I just did it on my own.

C.S.: This discussion divided the band back then. Up until that point in time, we had a kind of focus, that the band should always be presented equally. Meaning the singer shouldn't have the type of prominent status, that he naturally has, that it's not additionally supported. There were also musical preponderences. Some vehemently tried, and others just fell by the wayside. This had little to do with democracy. All of the discussions regarding the video, almost led to the band splitting up.
It took on a momentum of ist own and eventually, no one in the band could have his say which culminated in leaving everything to Till and the director.

R.Z.K.: So it was decided, that only the singer was to be represented in the video.

P.H.L.: He then practically ended up in the hands of the director and had no more resistance, because he was on his own. But Till didn't complain. When a decision has been taken, he accepts it.

J.H.: I can't recall exactly at the moment, if there was some kind of technical background, why Till had to perform in the video alone. He himself was against it. He said: "Why me? There's nothing much interesting about me". But it is indeed interesting and worthwhile being showcased.

C.S.: I don't always like hearing the song. It still often brings a tear to my eye. It still touches me a lot. Actually, I was more representative of those, who said: You can do that sometimes and sometimes make an exception. You can sometimes make a video just with Till. The way Till performs in the video, I think it's pretty good. I like it personally.

P.H.L.: I think, in relation to other bands, we have a higher success ratio in regard to good and unique videos. I'm really pleased about that, which is why I don't think it's so bad, when one or the other is not quite one hundred percent.

R.Z.K.: That was the type of video, whereby I could quite easily imagine a Part 2.

T.L.: I like that video. It is morbid on the one hand and has something sad about it.

C.S.: It is very personal and I think that it is still one of the strongest Rammstein songs.

J.H.: Of all the music videos I have ever made, there is really no band with which so much... Which was so difficult, yet also so fulfilling.
